About About Erik Erikson’s Theory

First published in 1950,Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development outlined eight stages that stage of life and development the healthy person goes through. Each stage is distinguished by a crisis that develops or destroys the personality of a person. The theory is based on Freud’s psychosexual stages,and also includes social influences. While it has been criticized for its broad interpretations and generalizations,it is nevertheless an important part of the psychological process. It has also been useful in rethinking the way we see the middle and later adulthood as times of personal development,rather than an opportunity to survive.

The first stage of infancy that lasts around 18 months. At this point infants depend completely on the caregivers. The child learns to trust their caregivers through watching their responses to their needs,such as feeding and comforting. The quality of treatment they receive at this period will be a lasting influence for their confidence and confidence in themselves.

The second stage of development for toddlers is called “tweenhood” in Erikson’s psychosocial development theory that occurs between the ages of 18 months and 2 years. This is when the child’s independence is developed. The success or failure in this stage will have a significant impact on the development of their personality. If a child struggles to overcome feelings of doubt or shame during the time of their development,they’ll remain in a battle with these feelings throughout their life. But,should a child be able to successfully finish this stage and overcome their fears,they’ll be able to build friendships later in life.

The third stage of Erikson’s theory is preschool,which occurs between the three and five years old. In this age group,children are learning to interact with others,as well as a strong sense of self-belief. Parents and teachers must encourage positive relationships with children during this age. Positive interactions encourage independence in children,and offer guidance and support. The negative behaviors,like negative criticism or indifference can affect a child’s confidence as well as self-esteem.

The elementary school is the fourth phase of Erikson’s theories and is a period between 6-12 years of age. It is at this age that a child begins to feel pressure from other people such as teachers and peers. At this stage,that a child starts to realize their the importance of work or their ability to achieve goals and achievements. The children who are praised for their effort and encouraged by their instructors will build a feeling of competence and will not be compelled to judge themselves against others.

During the middle-age stage the focus is often on their work and family lives but it’s also an age when people start to think about their own mortality. There are people who feel regret for things they’ve done or not done. If a person can manage to get over the hurdles of this stage,they are likely to enjoy a satisfying and rich retirement. If they fail to address these issues they could experience a midlife crisis which can cause serious mental health issues.
